Dr. Samir's House Destroyed by IOF
Craig and I were guests in Dr. Samir's house in
September. The children showed me their school books--English and
Arabic--and tried to teach me the Arabic words. They smiled at my
efforts and explained that Rachel had learned every word in their book.
They showed me the bullet holes in their bedroom that kept them from sleeping
there. I nestled with the youngest child while she quietly petted her
rabbit. We all gathered round the cloth spread on the floor and ate
broth, chicken, hummus together. I find the news today devastating.
Strangely, not so much because it was the house Rachel was protecting but
because I have this experience of having spent time in the house--and now it's
demolished. I cannot imagine how it feels to the family who built the
house, lived there, and tried to resist by staying so long. I just don't
understand the inhumanity of it all.
